Are there a few crinkles around your eyes when you smile? They might be indicative of your good character and the laughs you've had all summer, but unfortunately they're also a sign that the skin around your eyes is aging. The skin here is thinner than the rest of your face and body, and weakens as years pass. Frequent movement of the small muscles around the eyes makes your skin prone to wrinkles, and your eye area will begin to sag, puff and develop dryness and discoloration unless properly hydrated.

The good news is that you can reverse the damaging affects of the sun and delay your skin's sagging appearance with a good eye cream or serum. A little extra moisture is especially important as summer comes to a close and colder, dryer air moves in. Here is what you should consider when addressing the three most common signs of aging in the eye area:

Allergies, alcohol use, aging, and sleep deprivation can cause your eyes to swell, as can seasonal allergies. While facial moisturizers offer humectant properties, they aren't as likely to contain key ingredients to reduce puffiness. When deciding on an eye cream that is designed to cool and calm the skin, look for ingredients such as cucumber, aloe, mint, caffeine and licorice extract. The right combination of these ingredients will soothe swollen lids, thus making you look more luminous and awake. To achieve this look, we recommend using our Dead Sea Osmoter Eye Concentrate, which contains cucumber extract, caffeine, and our energizing Dead Sea mineral blend known as the Osmoter™. These ingredients work to instantly de-puff and brighten up your eye area for a younger, "lit from within" appearance.

For an extra-energizing effect, store your eye cream in the refrigerator. Wrap it in plastic to ensure it stays clean and fresh. If you have pollen allergies, avoid products that might cause redness and irritation, or test them on your hand before applying to your eye area.

Even a few wrinkles around the eyes detract from an otherwise youthful face. No eye-moisturizing product can fully erase wrinkles and sagging skin, but they can help firm the area and stall any further damage from taking place. In products, look for nutritive ingredients such as raspberry root extract, argan oil, pomegranate oil, and restorative ingredients like retinol. It is also important to consider the texture of the product: A lighter, hydrating serum or moisturizer will be smooth and creamy, while a serum that targets wrinkles might have less viscosity and will dry into a light film after application. This film works to fill in tiny lines and pulls the skin so it has a smooth appearance.

We recommend our Extreme Firming Eye Cream, infused with Dead Sea Algae, Osmoter™, Raspberry Root Extract, and Icelandic Moss for significant wrinkle reduction and extreme hydration. Use morning and night to tighten and brighten the skin.

Dark Circles

Shadows below your eyes can be stubborn, and some of us have them naturally. They often come about when we're tired or suffering from a change-of-seasons cold. Using an eye cream such as our Age Control Eye Cream beneath concealer or on its own can gradually lighten these haunting hollows. This multi-action eye cream was specifically formulated with peppermint leaf extract and jojoba seed oil to awaken tired eyes and target first signs of aging. Other great ingredients to look for in eye products that target dark circles include ginseng, vitamin C, or citrus -- all stimulate the skin -- and peptides that nurture damaged or weak skin cells.

Some eye creams designed to assist with under eye circles contain a small amount of foundation makeup or illuminating tints. You'll also find BB and CC creams -- foundations that combine moisturizer, sunscreen, and makeup -- specifically for the eye area.

Eyes Ahead

After identifying your specific needs and investing in a cream or serum, be sure to take care of it properly by storing it in a dim area. Fortunately, most eye products come in opaque jars or dark glass bottles to ward off light.

Follow the instructions on the package and make sure to give your product a chance to work. It's likely that you won't see results right away; in fact, improvements might not be evident for several weeks as skin cells move through their natural cycles. Using the product faithfully without an immediate reward might be challenging, so put an alert on your smartphone as a reminder and place the bottle or tube in a handy spot. And don't forget to wear a pair of shades when outside raking leaves or hanging Halloween decorations -- blocking damaging rays will give your cream a helping hand.
